Hakui City

In Hakui City, lion dances have been passed down in the villages and are performed at shrine festivals. The lion head called dora-shishi owned by Chiyo Town is the oldest historical item in the city. It was created in 1861 by a carver named TODO Hoku-un, and the history of the lion dance is thought to date back to at least the late Edo Period.
It is not well known what kind of person TODO Hoku-un was. However, his sculptures are elaborate, beautiful, powerful and impressive, and it is clear that he had excellent carving skills. This is a valuable item for learning about the history of Hakui's lion dance culture, but it is also an indispensable item for learning about the history of the performing arts, entertainment, and festival culture of the villagers at the time.
