Kanazawa University originated from the Hikoso Vaccination Institute established by the Kaga Clan in 1862. Then, the university’s predecessors such as the former national Kanazawa Medical College, Forth High School, Kanazawa Normal High School, Ishikawa Teacher’s School and Kanazawa Industrial High School were established and integrated into Kanazawa University under the new educational system in 1949. The main campus used to be in the Kanazawa Castle site and well known as a rare example of “university in the castle”. The Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Phamacy and University Hospital were on the Takaramachi Campus, the Faculty of Engineering was on the Kodatsuno Campus, and Medical Engineering Junior College was established on the Tsuruma Campus in 1972 (reorganized into the Department of Health Science, Faculty of Medicine in 1996). The Faculty of Phamacy and Faculty of Engineering transferred to the present location in 2004 and 2005 respectively. In 2008, a more interdisciplinary school system consisting of colleges and schools instead of faculties and departments was established. The university with the characteristic school system is continuing to make progress.

Established in 1989 to preserve and utilize valuable materials handed down from the predecessor school when the university campus was relocated from Kanazawa Castle Site. Former teaching materials such as beautifully shaped physics experiment apparatus and mushroom moulage specimens that allow you to observe mushrooms as they were 100 years ago are fun-to-see natural museum materials in the museum's collection. The museum also holds many archive such as timetables that show the hard work of medical students 100 years ago, as well as archaeological materials excavated within the campus.
