This tanka poem was composed in 1935. After retiring from Kyoto University, NISHIDA Kitaro lived a life commuting between Kamakura and Kyoto. In Kamakura, Kitaro often wore a simple, short kimono, casually tied with a white obi, and was frequently seen in white-soled geta, resembling a Zen monk. He made it a daily routine to walk by the seaside in the morning and evening, carrying a cane while dressed in his kimono, often gazing at the sea while strolling along Shichirigahama Beach. After his passing, a monument inscribed with this tanka poem was erected on the coast of Shichirigahama by his friends and acquaintances.
