This tanka poem written by NISHIDA Kitaro by brush was composed in 1910, when he was 40 years old. At that time, Kitaro had just moved to Kyoto after obtaining a position as an assistant professor at Kyoto Imperial University. According to his third daughter, Shizuko, Kitaro often reminisced about his hometown and frequently shared stories from his childhood. In 1918, Kitaro contributed a preface to the poetry collection “Suimei Kashu” by OGAWA Boshin, where he expressed his feelings for his hometown and included this tanka poem.
