The Kita Family residence is the estate of the Kita family, who served as village leaders of the Kaga Domain. The Kita family claims descent from the Nitta clan and is said to have moved to Kitakawashiri Village in Hakui District in 1638. They later developed as merchant landowners and began serving as village leaders in 1796, continuing this role for generations.
Kitakawashiri, where the Kita Family residence is located, is situated along the coastline of Hodatsushimizu Town, in a sandy dune area. To protect against sea winds, the residence was built within a dug-out area surrounded by a grove.
The main gate is a nagaya-mon gate with a hip-and-gable roof and thatched roofing. It is said to have been donated by the Togashi family, and is believed to be no older than the main house.
The main house features a gabled roof and curved-tile roofing, equipped with well-arranged tatami rooms suitable for a village leader's residence. It is estimated to have been built in the early 19th century when the Kita family began serving as village leaders.
Additionally, the tool storage was built in 1695, and the miso storage was constructed in 1786. Both feature earthen construction with curved-tile, gabled roofing.
During the inspection of Noto by the Kaga Domain lord Maeda Nariyasu in 1853, the residence served as the main inn, and the tatami room of the main house was remodeled. The current Kita Family residence largely retains the appearance it had when welcoming the domain lord, reflecting its legacy as the estate of the village leaders who supported agricultural policies in the Kaga Domain.
It was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan on December 28, 1971.
