The Okabe Family residence is the estate of the Okabe family, who served as village leaders in the Kaga Domain. The Okabe family claims descent from OKABE Rokuyata Tadasumi, who fought during the Genpei War, and it is said that they had lived in Oginoyachi Village in Hakui District for generations. They served as village leaders from the mid-Edo period until the end of the Edo period.
The main house of the Okabe residence was built in 1736 and features a hip-and-gable roof with thatched roofing and a tiled roof extending over the eaves. The thatched roof is notable for its large scale, layered from the inside with hemp stalks, barley straw, rice straw, and reed, making it a symbol of the Okabe residence. The tatami room is believed to have been renovated during the inspection of Noto by the Kaga Domain lord Maeda Nariyasu in 1853, and remnants of this can be seen in the three entrances that were used according to social status. The current Okabe residence largely retains the appearance it had when welcoming the domain lord, reflecting its legacy as the estate of the village leaders who supported agricultural policies in Kaga Domain.
It was designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Ishikawa Prefecture on January 25, 1972.
