The Suemori Castle Site is located on Mt. Suemori (elevation 138.8m) in the central part of Hodatsushimizu Town, and is considered one of the prominent mountain castle ruins in Noto. The site is strategically positioned at a transportation hub connecting Noto with Kaga and Etchu.
The exact date of the castle's construction is unknown, however excavations have revealed artifacts such as Haji pottery, ceramics, grinding stones, Go stones, lead bullets, iron nails, and copper coins, indicating activity from the late 15th century to the 16th century. Within the mountain, multiple earthen ramparts and moats, as well as structures presumed to be a koguchi (the main entrance) and an umadashi (earthen rampart), have been identified, along with a trench with a crosswise arrow shooting mechanism.
The earliest mention in historical documents is found in a letter from UESUGI Kenshin dated August 1577, in which a different character was used. Under the leadership of DOI Chikazane, who served the Uesugi and Oda clans, Suemori Castle functioned as the administrative center of Hakui District, and a castle town was developed. After Chikazane's death, the castle came under the control of the Maeda clan, with OKUMURA Ietomi (later Nagatomi), SENSHU Norimasa and others dispatched as castle commanders. It is believed that Suemori Castle continued to function until around the 1586, when the castle town "Suemori Town" was dismantled and relocated following the Battle of Suemori Castle in September 1584.
The site was designated as a Historic Site of Ishikawa Prefecture on October 4, 1991.
