NISHIDA Kitaro composed approximately 200 tanka poems during his lifetime. He composed this tanka himself on New Year's Day in 1934. Kitaro, who had retired from Kyoto University at the time, was actively writing thesis. However, a new academic trend was coming to the world, and TANABE Hajime, who was considered to be NISHIDA's successor, was also criticizing Kitaro's philosophy. This tanka describes the feelings of a man who feels that his philosophy is not truly understood, lonely as he walks along the path of solitary contemplation.
There is a stone monument with this tanka engraved on it in front of Honen-in Temple on Philosopher's Path in Kyoto.
