Wado-Kaichin coins were issued in 708, and are said to be the first circulating currency in Japan. The silver coins in particular are valuable due to their very short minting period, being issued in May 708 and discontinued in August of the following year.
The coin discovered at the Suematsu Temple Site was obtained in 1961 by a resident of Suematsu from the water channel flowing on the west side of the main hall site. The discovery of this historically important item prompted excavations, and also the development of a historical park.
The coin has been designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Nonoichi City, and a replica is on display at the Nonoichi City Furusato History Museum.
