This was the residence of TOGASHI Takaie, who was the first member of his family to become the shugo (military governor) of Kaga Province in 1335, and also served as the shugo's office where he managed political affairs.
It was assumed that the residence was located within Sumiyoshi-machi, based on Edo Period illustrations depicting defensive mounds and nearby written characters such as jokaku (castle) and nagadoi (long defensive mound), however its location become unknown during the Meiji Period readjustment of arable land.
Part of the residence's moat was confirmed during excavations in 1994, and the location of the residence was determined. The moat was dug in a V-shape, 6 to 7 meters wide and 2.5 meters deep, and ceramics and mirrors used from the 14th to 16th centuries were found in it. Based on maps, the size of the entire building is estimated to have been 100 to 120 meters square.
It is thought that the residences of senior vassals and the town of Noichi were formed by common people around this residence, and that it was a very lively area.
The area where the moat was found is preserved as a Municipal Historic Site. There are also exhibits about Togashi clan at Nonoichi Furusato History Museum and "Folk Museum NoNo".
