During the Yayoi Period, along with the beginning of wet rice cultivation and the use of metal tools, a new type of festival was also practiced. Various earthen products were used for these festivals.
First, bell-shaped earthenware products have been excavated from two core villages. The original heights are thought to be about 10 cm. The item excavated from the Yokaichijikata Site in Komatsu City (photo left) shows a diagonal lattice pattern on the body, whereas the item excavated from the Yossaki / Suba Site (photo right) has no patterns on its body.
Next, the bird-shaped earthenware product excavated from the Yokaichijikata Site in Komatsu City is 12.8 cm long. It represents a bird, and it is believed to have been placed at the border of a village or in a sacred place during festivals associated with gods or ancestors, or used as a festival tool based on the belief that birds carry the spirit of grain and bring about a good harvest.
There are also counterweight-shaped earthenware products. They measure from 5 to 10 cm in length and are believed to have been used in masks and as pendants. More than 40 items have been found at seven sites in Ishikawa Prefecture, including the Yokaichijikata Site in Komatsu City and the Higashimatoba-takenohana Site in Hakui City. Since these earthenware products are mainly distributed in the Setouchi region and the San-in region, it shows the active exchange between the regions and Ishikawa Prefecture.
