Minami-kuromaru (Suzu City)

This Suzu ware sutra cylinder was excavated from the Minamikuromaru Site located in the southern part of Suzu City. Among the large amounts of Suzu ware excavated at this site, many unused mortar bowls and peculiar vessels were found, so it is assumed that it was a distribution facility for Suzu ware. This sutra cylinder, which is a burial container for Buddhist scriptures, is thought to be one of these items.
The sutra cylinder has a diameter of 15 cm and a height of 25.8 cm, with the opening at the top showing an inro style, and two types of engravings on the body. Among these, the circular lattice pattern was also found at the Toyao Kiln Site, located about 1.8 km northwest of the Minamikuromaru Site, so the sutra cylinder is thought to have been fired there.
In addition, Suzu ware is known for its mass production of pots, jars and mortars used in daily life on the Noto Peninsula in the Medieval period. From the end of Heian Period to the Kamakura Period, when the production began, however, a variety of objects such as pots with four decorative ears, water jugs, Buddhist implements and stationery were also fired. This sutra cylinder is an excavated earthenware item that symbolizes the characteristics of Suzu ware production.
