Ouchigata lagoon is located in the center of Hakui City. Post-war land reclamation work transformed a large amount of the area into farmland, and the inland water level of the lagoon has decreased significantly, however it was once the largest lagoon in Noto. Up until the Showa Period, fishing was carried out in Ouchigata lagoon using cast nets, gillnets, longlines and hand nets, and animals such as crucian carp, carp, gudgeon, crawfish, eel, mullet and freshwater clams were collected. These fishing tools tell us that Ouchigata lagoon had a diverse fishing culture.
Nowadays the number of fishermen in the lagoon has decreased, and only winter crucian carp fishing is carried out using cast nets. However, you can still enjoy the lagoon food culture of eating winter crucian carp as sashimi.
