The Uneda / Jichu Site is located near the mouth of the Sai River, and together with the adjacent Kanaiwa Honmachi Site, they are considered as the official port of the ancient Kaga District. Buildings and warehouses were strategically placed along the river channel that flows through the site, and a large number of artifacts, including wooden tablets and sumi ink earthenware, have been excavated from the river channel.
Among the earthenware with sumi ink writing, there is a group with the character “語” (which means “word”) written on them. The majority feature only one of this character, and there are also distinctive ones with writing such as “語成人” (word adult) and “語 語” (word word). Among them, the ones with “語 語” are written in an unusual way by connecting the two “語” characters with a bar line. The bar line is always a separate stroke that does not continue beyond the “語” characters, and sometimes the two “語” characters have clearly been written by different people.
